Scarborough Marina News

New Regime

As of June 1st 2010, Scarborough Boat Harbour is now under the management of the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR).  Scarborough Harbour, along with Manly Boat Harbour and Cabbage Tree Creek, were transferred to DTMR from the Port of Brisbane due to the  proposed privatisation of the Port of Brisbane.  Scarborough Marina in conjunction with Marine Queensland and other long term tenants of the small boat harbours have now opened dialogue with DTMR to address the current uncertainty in the industry due to the unsustainable levels of rents introduced in recent years. Unless the marina rents issue is addressed equitably, economic investment in the harbours will continue to be restrained.

Transition to Queensland Transport

The Queensland Government has announced that Scarborough Harbour, along with other Port of Brisbane Corporation managed harbours, will be transferring to the management of Queensland Transport. The transfer, which was triggered by the proposed sale of the Port of Brisbane, should be complete by the first half of 2010.

Scarborough Marina Expands

Scarborough Marina has completed the acquisition of the adjacent facility formerly held by Stradbroke Ferries. The acquisition gives the marina the ability to expand boat storage and servicing facilities within the Redcliffe area. The additional space will provide for a more efficient layout and design for the future expanded marina precinct.

Clean Marina Level 3 Accreditation

In a ceremony at the marina attended by the Queensland Minister for Transport, the CEO of the Port of Brisbane, the Mayor of the Moreton Bay Regional Council, the local member for Redcliffe and other officials, Scarborough Marina was awarded a accredited level 3 Clean Marina status.

The environmental auditor noted: “Scarborough Marina is hard to fault with its commitment to achieving a workable balance between environmental impact and responsibility.”

Marina Patronage Grows

The 2006/07 financial year ending in June was a record year for the marina with solid growth in both marina and boat yard patronage. Rising land values have put pressure on the entire boating industry with steep rises in the value of waterfront land.

Port of Entry Changed

The Australian Quarantine & Inspection Service has decided to relocate the Port of Entry for small vessels to Manly Harbour for the next 3 years.  After clearing in Manly, Scarborough will continue to receive a similar influx of foreign vessels as previously.

Hardstand Facilities Upgrade

In line with our goal of continual improvements to the facilities at Scarborough Marina, customers will soon see some changes in the hardstand area. A newer Marine Travelift has been ordered and the number of fully screened pens will be expanded. These improvements of facilities will provide a number of benefits for hardstand users.

2003 International Arrivals

In 2003, 10% more boats cleared Customs and Quarantine at Scarborough Marina than in 2002. Based on information available from Customs, around 20% of all small craft arriving in Queensland are cleared through Scarborough Marina.

Dredging for Scarborough Harbour

The managers of Scarborough Boat Harbour, the Port of Brisbane Corporation, will be performing maintenance dredging of Scarborough Harbour starting in September. The first stage of dredging will be done with a grab bucket and barge in traditional style.

Of interest is the second stage of dredging which will be done using a new method of envirnonmentally-friendly spoil disposal. The new style dredging involves pumping the spoil into large geotextile filtration bags which allow the spoil to dry out without affecting the land on which they sit. These geotubes are 70M long! Once dry, the material can be trucked away using standard methods

Marina Office New Offerings

In our continuing efforts to make the marina a welcoming environment for new visitors, we are currently revamping our marina office to include a range of new products and services. Many of our visitors are from interstate or overseas, and do not know the Redcliffe or Brisbane area very well.

Our new office revamp will include a full range of information on the attractions and services offered in the local and Southeast Queensland area. Our goal is to make sure our visitors maximise the opportunities and fully enjoy their stay while in Scarborough Marina.
